What to Take to Disneyland....

...someone in a wheelchair.
Can you believe Megan's Brother is still single? After his 3rd knee surgery, he is legitimately, temporarily handicapped. That worked out well for us. On Storm mountain, he got 9 of us straight to the front of the 60 minute line. It turns out that Walt has a soft spot for wheelechairs. Most rides have a separate handicap entrance. You roll up to the front of the line with your group, you get out of the wheel chair and onto the ride and the when you are done, you get right back into the wheelchair. After this fact, i started noticing A LOT of people in wheelchairs.
Kevin just got his own place so he no longer lives in his parents basement. Let me know if you want me to line you up with him.
As it turns out, the Jazzy® was also very convenient for carrying all of the overpriced Disney paraphernalia we purchased.
It rained the day we got there and the day we left.
Weather was sunny and in the 70's-80's the rest of the week. Water was cool enough that all of the local surfers had full wetsuits, but the kids didn't seem to mind since it was snowing back home.

We spent some time in OLD TOWN San Diego and had dinner at a Mexican Restaraunt. When there is an item on the menu that dares you to eat it and then makes you sign a waiver before you actually eat it, it might be a good idea to order something else.
Here Ryan is sweating and eating and the Hot burrito of Death, or something like that. He only made it about 1/4 of the way through it. He paid for it all night long.

RAGNAR Vegas & CX RACE in SoCal

I realize that almost all of our vacations are based around either a bike race or a running race of some kind. Well it just turns out that this year, we planned a trip to Oceanside with Meg's family, and then it worked out that Meg could go a couple days earlier and run RAGNAR in Las Vegas with a bunch of friends. We could pick her up in Vegas and keep driving to California. We could spend the week in Oceanside with the in-laws and then i could do a Cyclocross race in San Diego before driving back to Utah.
We came down and saw Megan at her second exchange and then went and stayed with my favorite Aunt Barb for the night. We woke up the next morning to homemade waffles and lotsalaughter.
We went and saw the ladies finish their 195 mile run and drove to CA. It was much prettier than megan had anticipated since you did a giant circle around vegas starting in Valley of fire, heading to Lake Mead and then down and around, ending up at red rocks casino.

We spent a wonderful week having a great time in Oceanside. We had to be out of the Beach House by 10AM saturday morning, so that was just enough time to drive down to Balboa Park, clean up some kids throw up in the back seat, warm up, and do a couple of races.
I really take for granted the CX scene we have here in Utah. You can sign up for whatever category you want and don't have to have a racing license. The fields are huge and growing. Going to California, i was confined to race with the cat 3-4 field since i am technically a Cat 4 cyclocross racer. I figured i would do 2 races, not knowing what the fields would be like, how big, how competitive etc.
I started with the Masters 35+ 3/4 race which only had 12 guys line up. I missed the hole shot and settled back into 4th place to see how the competition was. After a lap, i had worked my way into second. I attacked on a long, hard, muddy section and got around front. I kept the pace high and stayed there. Around the corners i could see a gap starting to open so i drilled it some more. By three fourths the way through the race, i couldn't see the 2nd place guy anymore. I eased up a bit knowing i was going to be racing again after this race was done. Now i know how Bart Gillespie feels.
The 3/4 race started right after the masters race was done, so i had time to pin on a different number and get back in line. This field was a bit bigger with around 20-25 guys. I started and dropped into 4 th place again. we rode like this for a lap, but i could tell this was a lot faster pace. On the second lap, the guy that was sitting in 5th came around me on a corner that there wasn't room for 2 bikes and ran me off the road. I am fine with racing aggressively, but don't run me off the road only to ride the same speed as i was that early in the race. I passed and dropped him a lap later while another guy and i were swapping 4th and 5th place as the first 3 riders were 10 seconds up the course. Most of the race went like this until about a lap and a half to go. I realized at this point that it was now about 2 o'clock. I had breakfast at 8 o'clock, which consisted of a bowl of frosted flakes and a couple of donuts. This is the point where i dropped from 4th place to 10th place and was just glad to get in the car and make the 7 hour drive to St George.
The good news was that for winning the Masters race i did get some socks, a water bottle, a gift certificate to a bike shop in San Diego that i would never go to, and some beer which i also gave to the 2nd place finisher.

Capital Reef Classic '09, Then some much needed R&R at the Death Ranch

Bike Stuff Here:
I got my upgrade from a CAT 4 to a CAT 3 road racer a couple of weeks ago, but this was going to be my first race as a CAT 3.
Friday morning had an 8.5 mile individual Time Trial, Friday afternoon had a 53 mile circuit Race with some short but steep climbs and plenty of rolling hills to keep it interesting, and then Saturday morning, there was an 81 mile road race with a good 10 mile climb up to Fish Lake and then back.
The racing fields were small so they decided to combine the PRO 1/2 field with me in my newly upgraded CAT 3 field.
As a cyclist, i have occasionally found myself wondering how i would stack up to the guys that race in the PRO 1/2 field. After this weekend, I no longer have to wonder.
It started with the fast guys doing the 8.5 mile TT 2 minutes faster than me. I was OK with that because the TT it has never been my strong point and i don't love it enough to spend a lot of time getting better at it, although i at one point in my life could justify buying an actual TT bike and pointy helmet. The good news is, I did not take last place so that pointy helmet was totally worth it.
Next was the circuit race. When these fields go slow, they go really slow, but when they go fast, it is rip your legs off and leave you in a muscle cramped, whimpering mess on the side of the road calling for your mother. Just ask DC, he experienced it first hand. I got dropped on the 2nd of 3 laps around the circuit course. The good news, I did not take last place.Saturday morning, Megan took the kids with their second cousins once removed on a hike to find some petroglyphs while i did the Road race, which turned out to be a long, hot windy training ride for me. I did not take last place. The most difficult weekend of racing i have experienced, but it was really nice to have the family down there, as well as some random guy that was picking his nose in front of our tent. The temps in Torrey were only in the mid 90's instead of the 100+ temps they experienced up in the capital city, so i guess that was a blessing.
A couple of the guys in our field will be doing the Tour of Utah in a few weeks, so i shouldn't feel too bad about my performance....at least that is the spin i am putting on it to try and make myself feel better. This picture is proof that i was with the leaders at one point in the race.

Family Stuff Here:
After the race we headed up over a mountain to stay with Trigger and Regi. Almost an hour on a dirt road to anything paved and then a while longer from there to the nearest town.Time spent at the ranch with Trigger can only mean one thing,...

DEATH!

For someone that was a hardcore vegan only a few years ago, even going so far as to not eat honey because it was made at the expense of Bees, he sure swung to the other side of the spectrum. Working full time on a cattle ranch and now eating nothing but meat.

Last time we were down there, Trigger and the kids spent plenty of time gathering up bugs for a Bug Battle Royal. It wasn't really fair since they would pull off the rear legs of a grasshopper or handicap most of participants in some way to keep them all together and fighting. In the end, we found the army ants ate everyone. This year they approached it a little differently. Because the army ants were the defending champions, it was a matter of catching insects one at a time and then throwing them in a bucket and seeing how long they could last against a couple dozen army ants. The scorpions were the most entertaining battle, but in the end, they too were eaten.

The girls went with trigger to check the beaver traps. There were no beavers, but one muskrat was decapitated by a 30.30.
The girls made the comment that maybe they should have stayed at the ranch house, although they did start to get the hang of how things work down there.#1 told me when she grows up she wants to have a ranch and have horses and dogs that she can train for movies. She was totally in her element with all of the animals (except that muskrat)Cass-man is now potty trained and with no more catheters, and by potty trained, i mean he doesn't go to the bathroom in his pants. When you live on a ranch, the world is your toilet.
He already has callouses on his hands from working with his dad a few days a week.

We were down there when Regi gave Trigger his weekly tick search. You can see Tayler in the forground still a little shell shocked because Regi is VERY thorough with her search and Trigger is very open about his body.
I believe his exact comment was "Them lil' sonsabitches can burrow just about anywhere and i'll be damned if i'm gonna let one of them suck the blood from my arse."
#1 and #2 were having so much fun that we left them at the ranch and came home with hopes that maybe the Doctor will bring them home when he comes home in a few days. You can stay as long as you want when you have a pretend job like him.

Down South

We got the chance to spend a long weekend in St George with friends and family. We made fun of some people who deserved it, there was some bike riding,  some good food, some sore legs, Some HGH, some really good donuts, and some headwinds. the kids did some swimming inside and out, usually with swimsuits on.then there was some more bike riding

I am still waiting for the back rub that i earned by beating cousin kevin to the top of one of the climbs. Jenn didn't seem nearly as understanding about the whole idea as kevin thought she would be when we explained it to her after he lost.

The Whole FamDamily (almost)

This is everybody that went on the cruise, which includes everybody in our family except the Doctor.
He decided that the eligible pool of girls for him to date on the cruise might be a little young even for his standards.
Good to see him finally draw the line somewhere. ZING!

Disney Cruise

I admit that i was a little nervous to go on a Cruise, let alone one that was run by Disney. As excited as the girls were to go, i was equally as nervous about the whole thing. I am not the type that loves amusement parks to begin with. I don't care for the crowds. The characters really creep me out, plus, what must it smell like inside those felt suits in hot, humid weather, day after day? I am not a fan of the rides that go around and around until you feel like you are going to throw up. Which leads me to another reason i was nervous. What if i get sea sick and spend the whole week throwing up? Megan is a wonderful cook and eating out every meal for a week straight made me nervous. No homemade cookies? No homemade soup? We boarded the boat and spent a few hours with the boat in the port until everybody and all of the bags were loaded. During that time, we put on our swim suits and went and hung out at the pool.
The boat finally left the port and we took off for Key West. After a few hours we got dressed and headed to dinner where they had someone handing out sanitary wipes at the door. They were very persistent about cleanliness, which i figured could only be a good thing. The last thing they would want on a big boat like this is having the whole ship come down with something and having it pass around to everyone with no way of escaping it. It was a good meal which ended with us ordering one of every dessert on the menu, just so we could try them all.

In the Middle of the night, i woke up, sick to my stomach and i went and threw up. I went back to bed, but threw up 3 more times through out the night. I felt a Little queasy when the boat left the dock and started sailing earlier in the day, but not too bad. The water was a bit more turbulent in the middle of the night and i couldn't tell if i was sea sick, sick from eating too much dessert, if it was food poisoning, or if i had caught something, even though i was being very careful to wash my hands very thoroughly and often.
When morning finally rolled around and we docked in Key West and the boat stopped moving, i realized i wasn't sea sick. There were little signs in our bathroom that said that if you had any symptoms including vomiting or diarrhea to contact the boats medical director.
I figured i might as well go and see them and maybe they would give me a flu shot or tell me it was just food poisoning and i would be fine in a few hours.
After visiting the infirmary, and having my temperature taken, i was told that i was to be quarantined in my room for at least the next 48 hours, or until 24 hours after my last symptoms, whichever came first.Quarantined for 48 hours on a 7 day cruise. Nice!
I was told it was the Norovirus, which is "transmitted by faecally contaminated food or water or by person-to-person contact". That's funny because I didn't remember eating any pooh.

Before the cruise, I was worried about getting cabin fever being stuck on a cruise ship for a week. Now i had the opportunity to spend the next 2 of those 7 days stuck in a 10 x 20 foot cabin room.
Megan, #3 and #4 were supposed to be in my room with me and #1 and #2 were in my mom and dad's room with them. After i was quarantined, my room mates were moved to another room and i was left alone.
I spent the next 24 hours throwing up and watching TV and then throwing up some more. Apparently this bug usually manifests itself by "flooding the basement" too, but i was lucky enough to not have anything actually make it that far.
The person that came to freshen up my room would wear a face mask, gloves and clear glasses. He would change my sheets and give me fresh towels and i would lay on the couch sweating and fake smiling and apologizing about the throw-up he had to clean up splashed around the tiny bathroom. After about 24 hours, i finally stopped throwing up, but i was required to stay in my room for another 24 hours so they could be certain i would not spread the virus to other guests. I got jello and ice cream sent to my room and watched High School Musical 1 and 2 as well as Camp Rock, the Sweet life of Zak and Cody and many, many other Academy Award winning masterpieces.
While i spent some quality time alone in my cabin, doing some serious soul searching broken up by the occasional stomach cleanse, the rest of the family would lay by the pool drinking umbrella drinks and hanging out with Mickey and the gang. I guess the good news about me being quarantined is that they gave me a $200 per day credit for each day i was in there. It was their small way of saying, "Sorry you paid a lot of money and came on our floating bacteria dish and caught something and we sent you to time out."

By Tuesday morning i got the medical ok to rejoin my family in their new cabin and proceed with our vacation. I figured they would probably just burn the first cabin i was in. But then it made me think, What about the new cabin i was in? Did someone get quarantined in this cabin last week? What if the guy that was supposed to sterilize it missed a spot and now i was going to catch something else? Figuring that my immune system was working on overdrive right now and not having another choice, i sucked it up and slept in the new room.

By wednesday, i was still not feeling like i wanted to eat the way you are supposed to eat on a cruise, i started small, but eventually warmed up to it and got into the groove. Knowing i had a few days to make up for, by Thursday, i was eating breakfast, brunch, that meal between brunch and lunch that doesn't have a name yet, lunch, an afternoon snack, supper, dinner, a late night snack and a midnight snack. It was a lofty goal i had to eat that much, especially after being so sick for the first few days, but i always set my sights high. After a few days of that, i felt a little like the people on the spaceship in the movie "WALL-e".

As impressive as my consumption was, it was nothing compared to Trigger. I had a lot of catching up to do with being down and out for a few days, but Trigger was able to have double digit weight gains by the end of his trip. He limited himself to a diet of everything. He achieved his goal by ordering 2-3 main courses for dinner each night and only consuming the parts of those meals that were once on a farm. He did not let himself get filled up on vegetables or other useless empty calories. He was especially partial to meat that was killed in its infancy. I think he ate 2-3 whole cows by himself (some of them being baby cows), as well as pigs, snails and occasionally a bird or 2, but only if it was wrapped in bacon.
Trigger at one of the rare moments when he wasn't eating meat

The girls loved every minute of the trip and stayed busy the whole time. They had plenty of activities for the kids to do and were able to be quite independent of us. There was kids club where you check your kids in and they give you a pager and if anything happens, they page you. They loved having a soft serve ice cream machine available all the time and the never ending pizza was a nice feature as well. They had lots of cousins to play with and aunts and uncles to bug. There was karaoke, science experiments, a water slide, lots of pools, games, craft projects, movies and of course lots of sweaty felt characters in the shape of Disney personalities. At first, it was like "Hey, there is Mickey, lets get your picture taken" Then it became more like "Hey, there goes Mickey, lets go to lunch" and by the end it was more like "SSSHHHH, there is Mickey. Don't make eye contact or he will want to come over here. Pretend like you don't see him and maybe he will leave." I did get a new camera a few weeks ago that i was really excited to be able to have some time to play with it and get some good pictures of the kids. I brought a few lenses, and other accessories in a camera bag that in all weighed in at around 35 pounds. It wasn't until we got to Orlando that i realized that the battery was still plugged into the wall charger at home. I spent a couple hours friday night calling around, only to find out that there isn't a decent camera store in Orlando, or any of the nearby areas that would carry a battery for the new canon 5d mark ii. Now i had a 35 pound anchor that was too valuable to check with the luggage but completely useless for anything else. At least i had a little camera i carry around and let the girls play with and my dad had a nikon he brought but didn't use much, so i still was able to get some pictures.

While is was sick and hoping for my life to end, my biggest concern was for Megan. Would she still be able to have a good time even though i was so miserable. Who would open the doors for her or pull out her chair for her at dinner? Who would rub the aloe on her back after she got sun burnt? What if i did die? What do they do with the body until they get back to land. How would life be for a widow with 4 little girls. After coming out of my quarantine, i found out that she was never lonely, in fact she hardly noticed i was gone at all.

Apparently my brother Miah had an adult film shoot that the rest of us didn't know about. I didn't think that they would allow this type of thing on a Disney Cruise but he said he needed to grow his mustache out for the filming of "THE LOIN KING The circle of wifes". He offered to have our kids sleep over in his room one night but i declined. He kept saying something about helping him find his lost puppy and wanting to give the kids candy.

By Friday, i realized that i still had over $300 in credit to be used on the boat and they wouldn't cash out any of it. We got off the boat and went to Disneys own little island they bought and found some beach chairs. I ordered virgin strawberry daiquiries for everybody and we sat in the sun on the beach and enjoyed life.
A little while later the drink guy came around again so i asked him for another one. He asked what it was and i told him it was a strawberry daiquiri just figuring there was a lot of people and he forgot what he brought me 30 minutes ago. A few minutes later he brought it to me and i drank it. After a while i wasn't feeling great. It felt like we were on the boat and it was rocking. I told megan i was not feeling well and couldn't f igure out if i still wasn't totally over being sick earlier in the week or if it was something else. After megan looked at the receipts for the drinks, she realized that although they looked the same, i had 2 different waiters and the first daiquiri was virgin, the second was not.
I have avoided cruises and drinking any kind of alcoholic beverages for the first 34 years of my life. Last week, i was able to kill to 2 birds with one stone. I wonder what else is out there that i have not experienced?
Very little of what was said above is true but we all had a great time. Thanks Nanny and Dadu. It was a wonderful week, and just remember, with faith and trust and pixie dust, your dreams can come true.

Snow Canyon 1/2 Marathon

We went to St George with some friends (this term is used loosely) and spent some time hanging out before Megan, Lil' Joe and Big Dan ran the Snow Canyon Half Marathon on Saturday. It was nice enough weather that the kids swam for a while and we went and played on some rocks. I got in a couple bike rides in shorts and short sleeves and it was great to come home and see snow on the ground in our yard.
#4 discovered her hands and stayed entertained for hoursLil' Joe doing his best reenactment of his voyage through the birth canalHere are the feet Megan used to do the RunningMegan had a goal to do it in under 2 hours since this was her first half marathon since giving birth 4 months ago. She missed her goal by 11 seconds but was happy with her performance considering it was a hard course and HOT! Lil' Joe was very proud of the shirt he made for this event. In case you can't read it it says "Do Not Resuscitate" His wife wanted him to put in small letters under it just big enough for the EMT's to read, "Just kidding, I have a wife and 3 children, Please Resuscitate"
